âYouâve been MIA for, like, ten years,â Harper said. âHowâs it going?â She sipped her third cosmo while she sat across from me at the booth.
The bar was quiet on a Thursday night, and a few people lingered around the room. I didnât pay attention to anything other than Harper. âMy dad really likes him. He loves him like a son, actually.â
âExcellent,â she said. âI think you should wait a little while longer then move in for the kill.â
âWhat kill?â I asked.
âEncourage him to retire,â she said like I was stupid for not figuring it out quicker. âHe doesnât do anything anyway. The sooner heâs out of there, the happier everyone will be.â
âI donât want to make it obviousâ¦â
âThatâs why I said wait a while longer.â She snapped her fingers. âThen bam.â
âBam what?â
âHeâs gone.â
âWhy do you always have to talk like a serial killer?â I asked.
âMaybe I am a serial killer,â she said with an attitude.
âRemember, weâve been friends for a long time. You wouldnât be happy without me.â
She smiled. âYouâre safeâ¦for now.â She sipped her drink again. âHowâs it going with Rhett?â
There wasnât enough time in the day to explain how it was going with Rhett. âGood.â
She cocked an eyebrow. âGood? Thatâs all youâre going to give me? Seriously?â
âFine,â I said in an exasperated voice. âItâs going great. Heâs the most amazing and handsome man Iâve ever met.â
âThatâs better.â She gave me a pointed look then sipped her drink. âWhatâs he like?â
âI already summed it up. Heâs the most amazing and handsome man Iâve ever met.â
She gave me that no-bullshit look. âWhatâs your deal? Why wonât you talk about him?â
I knew why I wouldnât talk about him. âMy whole life, I assumed thereâs no such thing as a perfect man. Theyâre all assholes to some degree and nobody is perfect. Disney princes are the fabrication of a lunatic and they donât exist in the real world. But then Rhett proved that theory totally wrong.â
âSoâ¦whatâs the problem?â
âIâll never have him.â The air left my lungs and made me feel faint. âItâs like being close to a fire but never getting warm, or standing outside a candy store with your hand pressed to the glass. Itâs so close but so far away.â
Harper sipped her drink while examining me like I was a specimen under the microscope. âAre you falling for this guy?â
I released a sarcastic laugh. âI fell for him a long time ago, the moment I laid eyes on him, actually.â
âAre you being serious right now?â
âI wish I werenât.â
She gave me a sympathetic look. âI assumed you would want to jump his bones but to actually have feelings for the guyâ¦thatâs rough.â
âI know it is.â I was stupid for letting this happen.
âGirl, youâre absolutely gorgeous and I can guarantee he thinks the same thing, but keep in mind, he does this for a living. He takes women on dates for a living. Iâm sure itâs really hard to impress him.â
âIâm not insane,â I said. âI know heâs not interested in me.
